ENOVID STUDY THROUGH THE FNS

The following graphs show the implementation of birth control in rural Kentucky as a result of the Envoid trials that took place through the FNS. This study was the first of its kind and a revolutionary step in making strides for women's reproductive rights.

Patients who went through the Enovid trials that tool place in Leslie County, Kentucky. The study conducted in Leslie County was the first of its kind; the women of Appalachia who rarely left their homes made for excellent study subjects. Their experiences help shed some light one how birth control was first implemented into society, particularly one that so vehemently denies women control of their bodies - this can be attributed to societal expectations at the time and/or religious beliefs. The stigma these women faced from their families and the church made birth control a difficult routine to follow, making their stories worthwhile to explore.

RELEVANCE TO FREQUENCY OF BIRTH CONTROL USE

This Pie Chart shows how many months the husband had left the wives alone out of a year. When the Husbands left it was normally for the whole month or long majority of the month. Most of the wife’s husbands never left them once during the whole year, which is interesting to show how little the people in rural Appalachian traveled. This made this population great for a study because this meant that impact from outside sources were limited. An interesting point in this graph is the outlier, the one wife whose husband had left for three months. The reason why he had left her for such a long time was because he was arrested. The researchers kept track of this because for some women they did not take their birth control the month that their husbands would be gone, this would impact the effectiveness of the birth control.

SUCCESS WITH PREVIOUS PREGNANCIES

Out of eight of the patients we chose to highlight, only three of them had miscarriages. These miscarriages were labeled abortions, however none of these were medically induced. More than one fourth of the women in this portion of the study had an issue with holding a baby to full term. Despite having these miscarriage all of these women had at least two children

WERE PREVIOUS PREGNANCIES PLANNED?

Majority of the women in this research study had not previously planned their pregnancies. Most of these women chose to go onto this birth control study to hold off having their next child for a few years. On average the women wanted to wait around 2-5 years before they had their next child. Most of these women chose to wait, whether the husband knew about the wife being on birth control is unknown, however in one case the husband was the one who wanted his wife on birth control

SUCCESS OF CONTRACEPTIVES

This is a chart breaking down the success of the contraceptive used by the three women who used birth control. Patient 6 used a diaphragm, a dome shaped cup that is inserted into the women before sex to prevent the male partners sperm from reaching the egg. This patient did not have success with this type of birth control. The other patient, number 3 had her contraceptive fail was an Envoid participant who after taking it for two years had the contraceptive fail resulting in a pregnancy. The only successful contraceptive was used by patient 5 whose husband used a condom.
