STIGMA OF BIRTH CONTROL

The women of the past faced heavy criticism when using birth control. The social atmosphere towards birth control during the time of the FNS amde it difficult to convince these women to try it in the first place.

The social stigma of birth control use was very bad. It was looked at as taboo and a way to go against the social norm of large families. When talking about how the different genders looked at birth control their views differed tremendously. The men were completely against the use of birth control because they wanted to keep the tradition of large families
with many kids alive, women however wanted to start taking birth control. They wanted to start a new movement that would not let them have as many children. The women flocked towards Mary Breckinridge and listened to her new found ideas about being able to control pregnancy. Men were so against their wives taking birth control that eventually women were forced to take the pill in secrecy. They could not let their husbands find out they were taking the pill because if they did find out then the wives were at risk of being beaten and their medication being taken away.
